Lumbar Fusion Recovery Tips

I had L2-L5 fusion 2 weeks ago. I’m in a back brace for 6 weeks and my back feels ok relatively speaking. I’m having some serious pain in my hip joints and the doctor attributes it to my posture changing to compensate for the back surgery which I get. Anybody had this surgery and have tips to get through the hip pain?

Flexibility and avoiding deconditioning is everything. If you have access to physical therapy over the next year or so, I would highly recommend it.

Well, you can mark off "suck my own dick" from your list.

Sorry about the downvote. Up vote was the intent. I just whiffed it.

Do exactly what the doctor tells you to do.

I have been a physical therapist for 30 years. My advice. 1 wear your brace as ordered. 2 avoid twisting and bending forward. 3 Be compliant with your surgeons weight lift restrictions. If you were bent over before the surgery and are now more erect your hip pain is probably from iliopsoas tightness. Find a good physical therapist when MD orders and follow their instructions.

Physical therapy is going to hurt. Possibly a lot. Keep going to physical therapy. Stay in shape and watch your posture. A lot of pain, like the doctor said, it’s coming from your body having to adapt to a new posture. If you can, try to wean yourself off of the opioids as soon as possible.

Wife has had two of these, dr didn’t have her wear a brace…
She felt so good after the first one, she did things she shouldn’t have…second time much more careful and she has been pain free for over 5 yrs.

I have a good friend with lower lumbar issues. He played roller hockey til 40.
What would you recommend he do now to stave off surgery?
He's currently doing chiropractic, rest, steriods occasionally and pain meds, but is having issues more often. All I've told him is let his body talk to him as regards of what will inflame it and manage around it as best he can.

I had similar surgery last August. Mine was S1-L5. Dr. made me wait 6 months before physical therapy. I've been in P.T.
for seven weeks now and I'm just really starting to feel normal. Depending on age your recovery may not take as long. I'm 73, plus I had some issues with the incision getting infected so that slowed the recovery.
Don't rush it, listen to your Dr. and Physical Therapist.
GOOD LUCK with the recovery!

Depends on the reason(s) for his pain. Bulging disc(s) vs facet arthritis vs degenerative disc disease vs spinal stenosis. Knowing the cause determines the treatment. Generally the ultimate goal is to get to core strengthening exercises to stabilize the spine. Posture and flexibility also plays a role in treatment. Doing physical therapy right is his best nonsurgical option.
