It's a theory; that's it. Ron Paul can't prove that, nor does he have a lot of evidence. It could be true.

People like to look for a single thing - the QB lost the game, FDR sunk the USA, etc.

It's not one thing. Here is what happened to America. We had a resource rich land in which to expand. We were isolated from any competent nations by the seas. We were endowed with a new form of government that was far superior to any other.

With these advantages we generated wealth like the world had never seen and could scarcely believe. This wealth removed the need to live industriously and people began to sink into sloth.

The wealth created allowed the politicians to tax and spend on welfare programs that encouraged folks to accept that slothful living.

Thus anaesthetized, people stopped caring about their local governments, then their state and Federal governments. Unwatched by the people, these grew into giant bureaucracies that became difficult to hold accountable. Gradually our government changed from "by the people" to by the bureaucrats.

But that explanation, while true, lacks the pithiness of "a coup in 1963".
