Chickens and ducks in the same coop

I recently got 2 ducklings and put them with my 4 full grown chickens. While I was away the big chickens started ruthlessly attacking the little ducks leaving gashes on his head. (I tried to keep them separated but the ducks squeezed out of the gate).
Do I need to let them figure out the pecking order on their own or do chickens and ducks just not mesh well?

Now and then my ducks will go check the chicken coop for scraps. The chickens normally go after the ducks when they notice them there. All I got.

An established flock of hens will do that to any poultry / fowl.
We have a section of the coop we put our new chicks in so the hens can get used to them somewhat. You could use a dog crate or something similar.

Chickens can be some ruthless animals to each other. We used to use some kind of tar shite we'd buy at the local co-op and coat the backs of the chicks that were getting pecked. I guess it was nasty to the "peckers" and they would quit.
I found this with a quick google search. It might help.

probably not going to work, and as the ducks get older they have to have water to eat and they make a huge stinky mess

I have 2 ducks in a pin with 12 chickens and they seem to get along, they were all full grown before i put them together and the ducks held their own. It may be a size thing as to why the chickens are picking on them.

Get you a greenhead. Those bastards will rape all of the chickens and any other animal he can get his pecker in. Those chickens will run away anytime they see a duck coming.

As noted, they won't do well together in a coop but in a gumbo... now, that's another story.

You put chicks under a red light because even infant chicks will attack once they see blood.
Chickens are vicious little raptors and supreme assholes.
I've had full grown ducks with them but I've never even considered putting ducklings in with them honestly

Do not put a drake duck in the same pen with hen (chickens).
Drakes and hens
Drakes and hens
quote:
If you are also raising chickens and are planning on having a mixed flock you need to know that drakes may even attempt to mate with chickens, which can be highly problematic. Waterfowl are one of the few birds that actually have penises. Drakes have long corkscrew mating organs that stay tucked within the duck’s body until it’s time to mate.
Rooster’s on the other hand do not have penises, nor is the female chicken reproductive tract designed for penetration. A drake attempting to mate with a hen is very dangerous for the hen and can actually kill her.
