the spacers are anywhere from 1" to 3" thick

they bolt onto the vehicle like the wheel normally would, they are made so they have lugs sticking out the same as your vehicle did for the stock rims, so thats how the spacer connects and then the spacer, usually made of aluminum, is what holds your wheels on the vehicle

Thanks keakar. I understand now. I’ve seen some tires that project well beyond 3”..….they must use either thicker spacers or stack them together.

Does it have any practical use at all? Does it help to corner curves better due to a wider footprint? Or is just purely for looks?.
