Throughout all of human history the most valuable man in a town was the metal worker. Seems like a step backward to regain the strength and independence of the man over mass dependence. Show me a man who can work metal before 100 kids who are enslaved by the cell phone.

If there’s anything positive to be gained from the shite sociopolitical times we are enduring, a return to real world practical skills would be great.

What do you want to know?

It's something that is fascinating to me. Taking something impure and making something pure. Again, not sure what I would do with the capability.

What kind of furnace is recommended for starting out, and specific tools?

If you search YouTube for "TKOR metal foundry" they have a good diy video for starting out.

Go to tire shops and ask for their used wheel balance weights. Melt them down and cast lead bullets or fishing weights.

I scored about 100 lbs. of lead when the Sewerage and Water Board did some work in my area. They were tearing out and replacing lead water supply lines going to people's houses.

They'd remove them and just toss them aside and at the end of the day I collected them to use for making sinkers. I do 2,3 and 4 oz. sinkers for fishing the Mississippi River.

If you get 50% lead from a tire store you are doing good.
Steel and zinc wheel weights are common now.
