Hola..
So I decided to take advantage of the Xbox game pass and download skyrim for a replay. I haven't played it since it first came out.
Now.. this version comes with all the bells and whistles. Expanse packs and mods.
My question is what is a "mod" and how best to use them?
I'm sure it's got a bunch of options, but I don't want to change the game up too much.
How do I use them? Can I change them mid game?
Thanks in advance.
P.s. you may have to explain them to me like a child. I'm old and not very tech savvy

Mods are custom game assets that amateurs/aspiring developers make to improve games.
For example, each tree type in Skyrim is its own asset. When you download a new tree mod, it replaces the “vanilla” or default tree.
Since you’re just starting out, I’d say stick to the highest rated mods and keep it light. If you put too many in the game and they conflict, you’ll ruin your saved game

This. Don’t overwhelm yourself with them. Maybe stick to a few quality of life mods, especially at first.

Honestly if the game doesn’t work at first you just have to power through and add more mods until the game runs

You should definitely seek out the one that turns all dragons into Macho Man Randy Savage.

I don't know about Xbox but I assume there's a mod marketplace. Easiest thing to do is sort by most popular/highest rated of all time and use those. They really do dramatically improve the game and have great testing and descriptions.
There are a ton of fringe mods that may strike your individual fancy, but start with most popular and highest rated.

and all the spiders spider-man
But to me the best mod is Alternate Start just so I don't have to sit through the opening everytime I start a new character

Quality of life mods are probably the best for a start. There's alternate start mods allow you to skip the lengthy opening sequence. There's also mods that eliminate the loading screens when entering/leaving towns.
