Yeah, I am somewhat confused by all the hate. I was there last summer and stayed downtown near the river. I saw one homeless guy the whole time. I expected it to be a nightmare, but love it and my time there.
I am sure there are bad parts like every city, but I never felt unsafe and where I went was clean.
Eta: I was at the Marriott Downtown Waterfront near Portland State University. Perhaps a local can add context to my experience.
