Update: I bought Novolin insulin this morning at CVS without a current prescription. My blood sugar levels are still over 350 mg/dl but I am at work and climbing stairs and drinking water.
I appreciate all the responses I got from the greatest posters in the World.

You should be eating as close to zero carbs as possible until you get your insulin refilled. Even after that you should still remain relatively low carb

What are you eating? Low low carb high fat you have to be disciplined , I counted carbs for a year my diagnosed A1C was 11.9 went to 6.1 in 3 months sounds like your not eating right.

OP is definitely a body builder abusing insulin

Can you imagine being so fat that you eat yourself into a situation like this? Damn, man. I've never understood fatties.

You read the favorite donut thread, didn’t you?

I am 72 years old and a 35 year type 2 insulin dependent diabetic. There is something more to this story.
If you are type 2 and readings in the 400's stop sugar and carbs and get to an ER or urgent care.
Taking a wild guess, start walking every day and lifting twice a week.

I hope I don’t end up dead because of this. My blood sugars have been running up to 440 mg/dl today
As a fellow insulin dependent diabetic I’m telling you right now that lack of insulin isn’t the issue. You seriously need to change a lot of bad habits.

Yes, my son is type 1 and is in college out of state, and has had to use WM a few times when he ran out with no approved refills on weekends. Several states have passed “Kevin’s Law” which allow for a refill with no prescription. Sad story, guy was Type 1 and died over New Years as his Dr’s office was closed and he nor the pharmacy couldn’t get authorization for an insulin refill.

I have been eating clean the past six weeks but I am 45 pounds overweight and I have a sedentary job.
I need to start hitting the weights at AnyTime.

I know, way too fricking low. Should be at least double that.

How many people die from taking too much on accident?
You’re way out of your element here. An insulin user can easily die from taking too much insulin. Every heard of hypoglycemia? For a diabetic it’s the fast death. The slow death is high blood sugar and it’s effects on the body. Low blood sugar can quickly lead to coma and death.

It just shouldn’t be so damn expensive!
It’s actually gotten a lot cheaper in the last year.

U-500 is five times the concentration as regular insulin. How many units do you require/meal?
Are you on any long acting insulin like lantus or levemir?

I take 30 units of Humulin R U-500 three times per day.
Doctor switched me to U-100 Novolin.
I am going tomorrow to the clinic to get my A1C test at the lab. Hopefully, my doctor will reinstate my u-500.

How would a person even know where to begin with dosing if they could just go grab insulin OTC?
How do they know now? Can it not be on the label? Provided instructions? Do pharmacists come out and walk you though it each time?

How often does it happen? What about getting it from a pharmacy prevents overdosing vs getting it OTC?

The problem with it not requiring a prescription is that people are going to self-medicate. The danger of taking too much comes into play. There’s also the frequency of use. The OP requires an extremely strong insulin. I take Lantus once a day although I do take 50 units. At one time I also took humalog which is a fast acting insulin. With that one you have to do a finger prick to test your level, then calculate how much to take based on your current level and what you’re about to eat. It sucks royally as you’re doing that 3-4 times a day plus taking a shot of a longer lasting insulin at night.
The OP needs badly to get out and walk several miles a day, manage his diet better and lose that 45 lbs. He’s a walking heart attack waiting to happen.
