For those of you that have done it, did you drive the backway? We are staying at the Hyatt. Debating driving straight to Pipiwai trail and working our way down road to Hana on way back. We have reservations at black sand beach 1230-3. My question is how bad/sketchy is the back road?

Get a Jeep. I once returned a Lebaron convertible with more rattles than it had in the showroom. Take the back way back to civilization.

It's not as bad as people make it seem. That said, I imagine it can be a bit dicey during the wet season.

It might have changed since I was there several years ago, but the rental car companies forbid you from driving that road and one other on the northwest coast. So I had to do an out and back to Hana.

I went in summer of 2019 and I dont recall a reservation needed for black sand beach. We just parked and walked up. It was too crowded to enjoy for an extended period of time, so we only stayed there for 20-30 mins to get family pics and left. Awesome scenery, though.

Forget the actual name of the location, but the waterfalls where you could cliff dive is was our favorite spot. We stayed there for a while.

Inbetween those two spots was a regular brown sand beach that had hardly anyone on it. A few surfers and swimmers, but we had half of the beach to ourselves. Dont recall the name of this beach either.

This was going up the front way.

If I ever have to drive that road again, it will only be by going the back way first.

Do a helicopter tour over it. It's much more scenic and enjoyable.

It's not like they'll know you did.

They implemented reservations for Black Sand Beach during COVID and it sounds like they're keeping it for a while.

You're probably talking about Red Sand Beach in Hana. You have to walk through a relatively unmaintained path to get to it and there's limited parking, so I think that dissuades some folks.

It sounds like you went to the Venus pool for cliff diving, which is great.

We did it with a tour guide. The backside had more views in my opinion. It is seriously bumpy. Our driver said the way to drive the bumps was fast, so he did. Don’t take a rental car on the back road without 4wd.

We were going to do this or rental car. But our first night there we took an Uber to eat at Mama's Fish House (highly, highly recommend but you might have to put reservations in a few weeks early) and our uber driver volunteered to be our personal Road to Hana driver for $200. $200 all day, no time schedule. Also took pics for us when we wanted family pics and stayed away from us when we wanted family time at one of the beaches or pools along the way. Plus she was cute, so I was all for it. Mrs TTown knew I wouldnt complain

She used the Road To Hana tourguide app that was extremely accurate so we didnt miss anything.
