The Dell Inspiron in that link is a very good choice, and is priced at $600.

I would go to the Dell website and try to find a similarly-specc'd out Inspiron, or do a custom build, but save money (not alot) by going from 1 TB hard drive to a 512 GB hard drive (which is plenty of space), and bump up the CPU to something better within his price range, like an Intel I7.

The laptop in the link does not have a backlit keyboard. This may not matter to the OP's wife, but it is dealbreaker for many.
