Every Democrat I know wants Trump to be the nominee badly. He already lost to Biden and they're aware that he alienates suburban voters, particularly independents and wine and soccer moms. Over 5.5 million people in both 2016 and 2020 voted for at least 1 down-ballot Republican but not Trump. DeSantis doesn't have the baggage and the electoral limitations, and therefore won't alienate those voters and have anywhere near that volume of ticket-splitting. The suburban voters that put Youngkin and Kemp into office don't like Trump. They don't like Herschel Walker. They would absolutely vote for DeSantis. His electability in a General Election scares the Dems, which is why they'd rather face Trump.
