Hotel in Phoenix

We are staying a night in Phoenix for a Diamondbacks game before we go to the Grand Canyon and Bryce and Zion. We’ve never been to Phoenix. Is the downtown area safe or should we stay in a hotel on the outskirts? We will have our two daughters with us.

Thanks! I just looked at that hotel and it’s over our budget. We are looking for around $150-$200 a night since we are staying only one night and will be at the game that evening then getting up and driving to the Grand Canyon the next day. But I will look at other hotels in the Scottsdale area.

Yes

Scottsdale or any of the "outskirts" would make for a long drive to Chase Field.
Downtown PHX is just fine, just don't head too far west or too far south of Chase Field (not that you would anyway). While you're downtown you can hit up Pizzeria Bianco or AZ Wilderness Beer Garden.
As for hotels - Palomar would be a solid option, a bit further (but still walkable or hop on the light rail) is the Westin. Hyatt Regency and Renaissance are other options.

Was there for the Super Bowl. It seemed safer than any of the downtown areas of the 10 largest US cities.
If you’re going for a D’backs game, absolutely stay downtown. Under no circumstances would I ever drive to Scottsdale if I was there to attend a D’backs or Suns game. Why deal with the hassle of parking or ridesharing to a game when you can just walk a couple of blocks? I don’t know what date you plan on going, but I can tell you now it won’t be raining.
If you grab pizza at Bianco (do it), get in line about 45 minutes before it opens for lunch. Any other time and the wait is hours long. They don’t take reservations. Locals recommended Harumi Sushi and Arrogant Butcher for restaurants. Both had long lines, but it was Super Bowl week. Don’t make the mistake of going to Blanco to get pizza. Blanco is Mexican food and Bianco is pizza. Both are good but Bianco is legendary.
Palomar is the closest hotel to Chase field, but there’s a Residence Inn and a Courtyard just as close. The Marriott may have a Moxy open by that time too. There are also larger hotels you can try: Hyatt, Sheraton, and Renaissance (Marriott). I’ve heard visiting MLB players often stay at the Hyatt or Sheraton. But I saw celebrities staying at all 3 of these and the Palomar during the Super Bowl.
Since you’re going with daughters, download the Waymo app for a private ride in a fully autonomous vehicle. The only other city where you can do that is San Francisco.

Ehhh I wouldn’t say that with 100% authority. 2 days after the Super Bowl many parts of PHX metro got slammed with a bunch of rain and even hail

The Valley has a very good light rail system that runs right past Chase Field. Try looking in downtown Tempe near ASU and take the train to the game and back.
