I will be going on spring break (late March)

Any knowledge on where to go? Gear to use? Times? Fish to target?

All insight helps, just want to get on the most fish that I can while I’m down there.

You better know what you’re doing out there.

My ranch is 25 minutes from the launch and it can get hairy pretty quick

I’d use a guide service.

Looking to mostly be on the shore to fish. Is that even an option on that bay or should we go to one of the surrounding beaches?

I fish down there a bunch. We stay in Port A and fish there and the LM and Baffin. Mostly June through October. In June it is a solid trout bite on croaker. Reds can be scarce but they can be found on the grass flats. I usually go with guides out of Clem's Marina which is what I highly suggest you do. I have been doing this for the last 5 years and actually know the spots now well enough to probably fish on my own.

I live about 30 miles north of Baffin Bay and will tell you, you really need local knowledge to move around . The good navigation water is the ICW. Every thing else is shallow enough to ground a flats boat. The deep areas are infested with calcified worm piles that will remove your lower unit.
The trout are monsters that frequently are oversized and need to be turned loose for breeding. I much prefer the super spook jr white topwater as a lure. The water is saline to the extent that oysters do not grow much there. Night fishing under the dock light you can catch med trout 2 at a time just like we used to do in Lake Pelto La. in the 1965 period. It will not be a meat trip. Limits are set way low

Y?ou absolutly will not shore fish. No road access and private property. Suggest you get a kayak and fish out of the South Padre nat seashore boat launch

Didn’t they have a huge fish kill with the freeze recently?

There was a huge one back in early '21. That's why TP&W dropped the limits. We also had a good freeze back at Christmas but not sure how much of a fish kill took place with that. Those hard freezes really hurt that area since the overall water levels are super shallow outside of the ICW and when the commercial traffic rolls through on the ICW, it does a lot of damage with the fish that congregate there.
