I’ll give you another take. There are those who only believe in themselves. You for instance, SFP are your own supreme God. And there are those who see the old virtues ( humility before God ) as important for not only their own soul, but at least in a societal way. They see good ( light compassion charity love humility service etc) and they see nihilism ( darkness, narcissism, violence, cultural deterioration etc) and they worry about the crass and degenerate nature of the culture. Because it’s the culture that we life in, the one that sustains us. The more healthy it is, the more healthy we are.

Saying that “ it’s always been this way “ is true enough. Mankind is vile. Which is why we take pride in elevating, being a healthy culture. We know how quickly society can turn to the darkness of State violence and the abolition of the principles, ideals and Institutions that make us cohesive and strong.

This is just example number 1837289373893738 of a rapidly degrading culture. So rather than be with the edgy kids and looking away, I’d prefer to examine what it means. And what this means is that a larger and larger percentage of our culture not only accepts, but celebrates the darkness.

The only correction I'd make is that people like him also see their virtues as very important in a societal way. People who think this is a binary issue consisting of "you want your morality enforced and I don't" are shallow thinkers.

I mean from a historical perspective, we're at the highest state of morality in recorded history.

Violence is way down. War is way down. Immoral institutions like slavery are way down.

The problem is that we're at such an elevated state of morality, that both extremes have to reach. People on the more culturally progressive side of things can't be happy with our status because they have to keep pushing and that leads past reasonable things (like legalizing gay marriage) into silly-crazy things (like the trans stuff).

On the flip side, the cultural conservatives can't accept that we're not all sinners bathing in immorality, so they project the same sorts of memes (witches/satan, child abuse, etc.) they've been using since at least the 1600s.

Both of these groups are in the minority of the overall population and are playing off each other, creating polarity like the useful idiots they are.
