It makes me wonder if there is anything you can do to help trees like that out before an ice storm? Using ratchet straps around where the trunk forks out to give it some extra stability?

Just read that ice and increase the weight of a branch 30 times. Not much you can do to stop half an inch of ice from snapping branches 50 feet in the air.
