Taking the personal life out of it I don’t think it’s sad from a professional standpoint. Better to know for sure you’re not at the level you want to be as opposed to always wondering what if.
He didn’t fall off a cliff skill wise but he was slipping enough to not be at his standard.

Tbf, I prefer all top athletes to go out like this rather than retiring prematurely like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson.
