Alabama's average SAT scores seem to be oddly high, at # 20, considering where they are in all other rankings.
Anybody have a guess why?

I would guess that southern states use the ACT. Most high school students here don’t take the SAT, only those who want to apply to national brand, competitive colleges.

I would guess that local colleges use the ACT. So the only people actually taking the SAT are trying to get into more selective out-of-state schools (that tend to prefer SAT). So the SAT scores only include the very best students in Alabama.
