Yes and no it won't ruin people's lives. The drug war itself ruins lives and people are going to use no matter what.

Look at Portugal, they legalized everything and took the money they spent combatting it and invested in treatment facilities and more importantly reintegrating the addicts back into society. As a result drug use went down, od's vanished, and no one wants to go back to the old method.

We just need somebody in office with the balls to do that, but nah the effort is better spent on a war everyone admits is failing.
