There absolutely was CGI in the 80's, it just wasn't widely used and didn't produce the same visual quality as practical effects. But we're only talking about CGI adding a half second of muzzle flash on a prop gun, not like they're adding an entire scene full of CGI characters and creatures that have to look realist.
