I have often used the Japanese as exhibit #1 in this comparison.
I grew up during that era. "colored" people were everywhere and NOBODY 'hated' them. I My first memory was as a 3-yr old when Pearl Harbor was bombed - I had no idea of any details but I knew afterwards that is was all because of 'the JAPs.' Pure white-hot hatred was universal for anything "JAP." It was truly the only hatred that I ever recognized as literally being palpable. Hatred towards Germany seemed to be limited to Hitler as a person. Not so, the JAPs.
And yet, wishing a generation there is zero residual hatred for Japanese - they are revered for their individual character.
