Why aren’t local criminal trials available to watch on TV?

I am not trying to make this a capital punishment discussion at all.

Easy to watch the real housewives- “hard hitting real stories” these days.

Public likes true crime documentaries where director/producer can spin it how if they so choose.

OJ trial was about as dark as it gets in the details of the crime and they aired most all of it and a lot of people watched daily.

TV people seem to care about ratings so why not air local cases and let the public decide what they at least believe is right and wrong?

Just seemed like a good topic for debate.

Fair trial, but this is generally out the window as soon as someone commits a crime and media picks it up.

If trial not fair with cameras on? Verdict still stands regardless. Maybe just for cases where jury is sequestered??

I have a job so couldn’t just sit there watching all day but more folks could see what is going on in their area and comment on it.

Just my opinion but would be more value added than older folks watching CNN or Fox News all day.

If you are talking about Louisiana, there is a prohibition on cameras in the courtroom at the district level. At the appellate level and Supreme Court level, media cameras are okay. Depending on jurisdiction and some courts like the Louisiana Supreme Court even live stream their appellate hearings.

I think it is time for the veil of the courts to be lifted in Louisiana on the criminal side for capital crimes. If the courts have an issue with the media controlling the camera and where it points, the court can manage the camera and provide pool coverage to media outlets and their court’s website.

I don’t even understand why this is still an issue since some courts even used Zoom during COVID for some cases, and are equipped with security cameras. Some courts even have a closed circuit setup for some criminals to appear in court without having to leave the jail.

I used to love Court TV back in the day when it showed actual trials. The last trial I remember watching was the Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin trial. It was on all cable news channels I think. Fascinating stuff.
