So basically you now have to directly pay USGA for a ghin then just make sure its linked to your grint account and you are good to go again.

I don't really give a rip if the USGA has my handicap, but will it still update in Grint as you add rounds?

I've noticed that my friends that were paying to track their handicaps now show up with the range like those that don't pay for it. So, you may have to do something extra to have your handicap calculated. Of course, you could also add up your 8 differentials and divide by 8.

I purchased my GHIN handicap through USGA. I only input in the Grint and it still updates on my USGA account as well. The Grint is accurate with their estimated HC, but they don’t keep an actual Index unless you purchase a membership with USGA.
