When buying or selling stock via NASDAQ (or other exchange), is there a way to know who the counter party is? If not, why not?
Presume very rarely am I (the avg joe retail trader) trading with an avg joe retail trader but rather the Wall Street professionals. Can this be known?

The counter party is a middle man. You buy and sell to and from market makers. Not Joe Blow
