Any of you gents have experience deer hunting in Sabine Island WMA? The only WMA I've ever hunted for deer in was Sherburne. And now that I don't get to duck hunt much anymore, I'm thinking of going scout around out there for next deer season. Just curious if its worth my time.

Whats the terrain like? Does it get as crowded as Sherburne does?

Any info you guys have about this WMA would be greatly appreciated.

I've been to Niblet Bluff Park a few times to fish, but never did any hunting.

I think I wanna give squirrel and deer hunting out there a shot next season.

ETA: Looks like it can ONLY be accessed by boat, which is good news for me.

get a topo map and learn the terrain, go scouting after the season to identify trails and deer sign. This should help - WMA map

Hurricanes caused LOTS of fallen trees making certain areas very hard to navigate

Yeah, I've done everything I can on the computer. I know I'm gonna just have to go out there and scout, but I'm just looking for personal experience with the area.

It's pretty damn thick since Rita and now Laura/Delta. Lots of pigs. In general, the southern portion is lower in elevation than the north half. I can send you a map with some spots to check out that used to be really good.

I don't hunt there anymore- just like Clear Creek better.

Wanted to add that the squirrel hunting used to be phenomenal. My Dad would drop me off on the bank and i'd hunt while he fished. I'm not sure how good it is now.

Only accessible by boat which limits access to most yahoos but have a lot of deer. Have a huge island to spread out. Sometimes hard to get to certain areas depending on river height but it’s worth it. Have a ton of deer and if you can sneak in on a canal running through the island you can find hot spots or common crossings to ambush. That being said, hurricanes obviously did a number on it so downed trees everywhere make it tough to navigate some places

Also, being mainly a bowhunter, i don't like the season layout.

You need a boat that can hold your wheeler. Then you drop the wheeler off and cross the trees. Big bucks are waiting

Dont really care for specific spots, but locations where to enter from the water that will allow for some walking around is really what I'm looking for.

Spotty cell service and very fkn easy to get turned around or just plain lost. Carry an old school compass with you and thank me later. Lived 30 minutes from it my entire life and I can still get confused quick when I'm in deep. Not a bunch of deer or big deer but does have a healthy population. Just gotta hunt hard. Island aint no cake

Yeah, I have a healthy respect for that place.

Funny story... About 35 years ago on the Monday after squirrel season started, me and my Dad go to the river after school. He's gonna fish and i'm gonna squirrel hunt. We launch the boat on the north side of the island and start heading down old river. We no sooner picked up any speed and we hear a bunch of yelling and a guy jumps into the river along the edge and he looks like he's practically about to swim to us.

So we're like what the hell and we head his way. You haven't ever seen anyone so happy to see another person. He was camping at Niblitts and got up early Sunday morning to make a squirrel hunt and had been lost ever since. He was bound and determined not to have to spend another night in those woods.

He explained where his boat was and my dad said "son that ain't no where around here". We'll take you back to the park in our truck." You're gonna have to get someone to bring you to your boat from there.

Turns out that dude was a lake charles city cop. Anyway, i'll never forget him trying to get in the boat with us.
