Watched it last night...decent show...I don't know what to believe at the end.

Yeah, they didn’t really tie it together at the end. I think it’s partially because even the police and jury don’t know for sure.
My guess is that Kai was delusional and thought the lawyer was a sexual abuser of children when he was actually a guy who occasionally hired male prostitutes.
The fact that no one came forward (publicly or in private) to say anything bad about the lawyer in the months after his death is a big strike against Kai’s story. Also his story doesn’t really add up at all. Why would he return to the house of a sexual abuser within hours? Their body language on the surveillance video at the train station is not at all aggressive or combative, the lawyer’s body had no marks of struggle, etc.
My guess is Kai occasionally had sex with men for money. Once or twice in the past, those experiences turned violent.
The guy had a savior complex, which is easy to live out on a daily basis if you’re an ER doctor. Much harder if you’re an alcoholic drifter.
So at times he invented conspiracies in his head or created scenarios where he could be the hero and step in and save the day.
