Driving in the mountains is not as simple as 100 miles will take me 1.5 hours. Keep that in mind, your trip plan sounds like some serious time in a car. I would not waste your time in SF or Oakland.
Monterey's aquarium is world class. Cutting through smaller towns in the valley is a good learning lesson. CA has a TON of agriculture that feeds people throughout the West/US.

Thanks. We drove from Denver to Grand Canyon, all Utah parks then to RMNP and back to Denver. My boys are fine with the ride and we try and stop as much as possible for pictures. I am guessing a lot of speed traps in small towns?
