I have a question about the VRO pump.

I would estimate 85-90% of the posters on this board. Used to own an old Johnson 10, but it’s been awhile. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

I have a 90 ETEC, but I am no mechanic. Forgot the mechanic’s name, but the guy over at Blue Dot in Chalmette has always been super helpful.

Still running my 1998 old 225 ocean pro. 3500 hours and counting. I did away with the oil pump though I premix in the tank. Had my “no oil” alarm go off while offshore. Had extra in the boat so poured it in the tank and marked the oil tank level with marker. Fished all day and when we got in the oil level was well below the mark so pump was working it was just the sensor but still spooked me enough to do away with it. One less thing to worry about.

With the alarm going off the entire trip?

It would only sound off for like 30 seconds each time motor was cranked then the alarm would stop and just the light would stay on. Was not worried about it not getting oil bc as I said I had extra oil board and just poured it in the tank so worst case it was getting double oil which doesn’t hurt those old loopers at all. You run them double oiled during break in a ways.

Been along time.
When mine had the O-ring leak and oil would get on the gas side of the VRO, I was done with the VRO.
Ripped it off.
They offered the fuel pump for the same price.
I just mixed the oil with the gas never looking back.

Only one thing to know about OMC VRO systems and that is that they need to be eliminated. They worked fine until they didn't. I have had many 2 stroke oil injected outboards over the years and I have done away with the oil injection on ALL of them if they were more than 5 years old or so. May foul plugs every 3 years or so but other than that I have never had an issue with eliminating the oil injection. Simply cap the line, eliminate the buzzer/horn and mix oil. I have also always mixed it slightly rich...I don't mind exhaust and spark plugs are cheap. A LOT of 2 stroke VRO OMC outboards still running in the world and they can be bought for nearly nothing.....

Yes they make great anchors and/or artificial reefs.

Get rid of the VRO. It's only reason for being on there was to satisfy government emissions by throttling back the amount of oil the engine uses, mainly at idle and mid throttle.
You'll see more smoke and burn a little more oil when premixing but you will be coming out ahead when comparing the price of oil vs a rebuild of the engine when it eventually fails.
