Counterpoint:
Damar Hamlin was a 6th round draft pick. He is only in his 2nd year in the nfl, so he is not vested & will not receive lifetime healthcare unless he plays into his third season.
His salary this year: $825,000 with $160,476 in signing bonus
I don't know about you, but I don't think $1M pre-tax is enough to survive the rest of your life, especially with the likely medical expenses he will have
Obviously what you're saying applies to the big earners but a lot of NFL players are earning minimum pay

He has to pay taxes on that, his agent gets a cut, other people who work for him or represent him get a cut, he has to pay for cost of living like anyone else. A lot of people see these big numbers but don’t realize how far it really gets you. It dries up almost immediately.

I have compassion for a guy that receives a life impacting job related injury, not so much for an NFL player being considered “underpaid,” particularly when that is likely his only marketable skill

I'm having trouble worrying about NFL players earning almost 1 million per year as minimum pay and it not being enough. That seems to be more of a systemic issue of them being terrible with money, than it actually...not being enough. If you ride the bench for 3 years at minimum pay, you should never have to worry about money again.
It applies to all NFL players, regardless of their level of pay.
Side note: the NFL will 100% take care of Damar Hamlin if he cannot play/earn a living outside of football. It's only good PR.
