Are you saved in their favorites? Maybe that will override whatever is causing it.

I bet you have an iPhone 14 and are trying to text someone on Android, no?

Both of you turn your phones off then back on.

Did either of you port your number from one carrier to another recently? If so, it might have failed in the Number Portability Administration Center, aka NPAC/SOA. If that's the case, the carriers involved need to resend the change through the NPAC system.

Just happened to my dad. Att finally gave the person that could not get texts a new sim card. That cleared it up. I played with settings/cache etc...for days. New sim card. Problems gone.

100%. We have eight or nine guys in a group on iPhone. One member is on Android. If the Android guy is in the group, texts from anyone, to the group, fail at least 30% of the time. Same group minus Android user, 100% delivery. That's exactly how I almost got left in College Station in November.
It got so frustrating that one of the group bought this dude an iPhone, which he refuses to open.
If you are in each other's contacts, it wouldn't be the "unknown contacts" SPAM reduction tools that are doing it.

If some Apple snob bought me an iPhone and tried to "force" me to use it, I'd either sell it right away on the open market or they'd be extracting it from their backside.

The funny part it you and your friend's frustration should be focused at Apple; not your buddy. They are the party at fault for that problem unilaterally with their imessage environment. SMS > MMS > RCS
Buying that apple device was a shitty move by your friend.

Odds are that someone in the group with an iphone is still trying to message you/your friend with an imessage account. So it could be an email address or the phone #.
It's really not that hard to fix. Have your friends delete the group thread/chat and start again. Your text messages will be green but who really gives a frick. It does sound like you and your buddies are just out of college so your age bracket might be the only one.
Hating on apple or android is just lame as frick in 2023. Android people constantly bashing apple for the walled garden is silly. Phone carriers and Google did NOTHING to progress messaging until iMessage came around and shite on everyone. Then the Facebooks and Snapchat and whatever the frick apps copied it and google finally piddle dicked around and upgraded to RCS.
Is it apples "fault" for locking folks in, sure. But Google would do the same thing if it was their application.
