Covid was just the last straw for a lot of mentally weak people, and the constant deluge of fear porn for two years has addicted them to the fear

Bears repeating.
How odd to be conditioned to a fear and hate-based "fix". (When they see the MSNBC - CNN logo on TV, does it give them a dopemine high in anticipation of all the fear-porn bad news?)
These same broken, insane pods probably can not wait for MSNBC to report news of a tenth booster, more fatal viruses (incurably if possible), and... an asteroid heading for their neighborhood AND WW3. (They extended fantasy: ALL of the above reported on the very same 'SPECIAL NEWS REPORT'.)
