This is absolute bullshite. Insurance from a fire covers your personal property and your building. There are significant other coverages built into policies to cover things like extra housing expenses and meals out.
Only once have I ever given to anyone after a house fire. Two months later he was telling me how much money he got from the insurance company and they were going to rebuild with some serious remodels. His house ended up being beautiful and way nicer than before it burned down and he had all brand new stuff.
Yes, it is tragic when you lose some of your memorabilia and heirlooms. That sucks and you can’t replace this but insurance minus their deductible will cover all their expenses.

They may not have had a replacement cost policy on this house. If they did, then you would be mostly correct.
