Bowl games outside of the playoff are not going to exist in 10 years.

No. 17 LSU vs. Purdue
Jan. 2, 2023 – 1 p.m. ET (ABC)
Payout: $8,224,578
THIS is why the bowl games are played… not for players or fans.

They make a lot of money, so I will respectfully disagree. The playoff expansion will definitely help keep a lot of NFL talent on the field for an extra game or two. That being said, both teams in bowl games usually come from decent talent and prospective NFL talent. It is a rare situation where you have to play a backup wide receiver at quarterback and play with 39 players. I'm personally happy that LSU had the NFL talent to win the west and get a chance to play in a bowl game. I also will enjoy watching some of the younger guys get some valuable reps to prepare for next year. My biggest gripe is that Nuss shouldn't have lost a year of eligibility if he played in the bowl game last year. That is what needs to be fixed.

Guys are opting out of playoff games already. Expanding the playoffs does absolutely nothing to fix the problem.
All bowl games will/are turning into pre-season games for the following year.

I will respectfully disagree. We had a lot of players (Rashard Lawrence) come back to play an entire season for the chance to play for a National Championship. There may be one or two here and there, but I would propose that many more would value that ring over the chance of injury.

Did BK opt out last year ?
He was busy getting coaches and recruiting so we'd have a fricking team. Get a clue.

frick a bowl game these kids came to LSU to get into the league and frick playing in a meaningless bowl game to blow out an ACL.
Yeah... who needs College Football. Frick College Footbal.

That was 3 years ago. I believe Ohio St. has already had opt outs for the upcoming playoff and they basically have a 25% chance of winning a NC. Majority of these kids value money over winning a college NC ring. It's just the way it is IMO

They've had two "opt-outs" -- one is because he's too injured to play, and another is in the transfer portal, so this is an incredibly valuable time for him to be meeting with other teams/coaches/schools, and getting enrollment in order. If you're going to make a point, please be informed about it.

every other level of football has more teams making the playoffs than FBS...I never hear anyone complain about their format
When is the last time you watched a regular season game of one of these teams you refer to? How many non-LSU basketball games have you tuned into this year thus far? You scheduling your weeks around a lot of Kings/Thunder games this year? No?
If college football is your favorite sport, like I imagine it is for 90% of the people on this board, it’s because its regular season is the BY FAR the best in all of sports. And the more teams that make the playoffs in any sport, the more it inherently makes each individual regular season game mean less. That’s why this 12-team format is so important. By making conference champions auto qualifiers and giving the top 4 seeds byes (and hopefully the top 4 of the other 8 1st round home games), it still incentivizes having a great regular season and preserves the importance of each individual game.
Yeah, you may be able to lose a 2nd (and occasionally a 3rd) regular season game and still sneak into the playoffs, but you’ll have to go on the road to play a higher ranked team in the 1st round and if you survive, you have to go play likely a much better team next coming off a bye. Sure, there will be upsets, but the majority of the CFBP Champions will come from those 4 teams with the byes. Because not only is the set up much more advantageous for them, but they would have earned those advantages by proving themselves the best teams during the regular season.

1 thing I heard (Josh Pate says this) that makes some sense is move non playoff bowl games to the first game of the following season as an opener.
While it makes no sense from the standpoint of bowl games are supposed to reward the current team (it would be next year's team with new players playing in it), it would eliminate opt outs entirely from bowl season and create likely very good matchups to open the following season.
Some of the big hurdles there though are things like the neutral site games already scheduled to open the season as teams wouldnt play a bowl game to open the season at a neutral site then play another neutral site game after that losing a potential home game in the process. I guess you could play it up as an exhibition game that doesnt count as a post-fall practice exhibition game to reward 6-6 or better teams from the previous year as a gauge for the upcoming season without affecting record...but then would anyone really care about going to the games either? Not sure.

How does expansion make fewer games valuable? If anything, it's going to make more games matter. Now there will be twenty teams fighting for spots 5-12 instead of eight teams fighting for 1-4. The losses may mean less so far as whether you get in or not, but every top 25 game is going to matter now because more top 25 teams will have a chance to win and get in.

How utterly absurd. Let's sell Tiger Stadium and watch on TV
I was talking about the bowl games, dumbass. They play a lot of them in Tiger Stadium? They’re a reward for the players, not the fans. And for some players that reward may not be worth the risk to them.
We’ve had guys opt out of the Texas and Citrus Bowls so far. Can you c unts keep from bleeding a bit until we see guys at least sit out a NY6 bowl?

Oh, I lived with and went out with LSU football players way before NIL and the football ops building. I don’t feel sorry for them at all. At ALL.
I’m just saying they still work their asses off, and I don’t begrudge them a couple days at Disney im December and an XBox or whatever.
