Anybody been, I am heading to Phoenix next week with Son. Is there a viewing area like at Niagara Falls. Less the water. I only have a day to visit. Any suggestions on where to go on the canyon itself.

Edit:
Thanks for the information. Not sure I will like a Helicopter ride. Money is not the problem. It's the Helicopter.

If you can swing $500 each, a helicopter tour that lands inside the canyon would be a once in a lifetime event.

Yes...you'll enter the park by the south rim on Hwy 64 and once you enter the park just go straight to the visitors centers. Plenty of viewing areas, gift shop and the Rim Trail is right there too if you want to get in a little hike

Just check the weather and roads before you go. Go up to El Tovar lodge. Gorgeous from there. If you have time, swing through Sedona.

This is my jam. If you want a viewpoint on South Rim that's away from crowds go straight to Shoshone Point.

If you want to hike down a bit you'll want to ride the shuttle to the South Kaibab trailhead and walk down to Ooh Aah Point then come back up.

Try to make the time even if you don't stop. South of Flagstaff 89A and 179 are heavenly drives.

Going though Sedona and Flagstaff is probably the quickest route from Phoenix anyway.

And I couldn't agree more about 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff. That is one of my favorite drives ever. Absolutely stunning.

After 4pm Sedona and VOC are traffic-heavy to get through. But at worst it'll be an hour longer than bypassing via I-17

Its a long drive OP, its not a bad drive and parts of it are really nice but parts of it are the same desert view for miles on end. Some people like that, I love the desert but I hate the drives where you can see the same mesa for like an hour and the rest of the scenery doesn't really end!

Given that, you can see the grand canyon well in just 4-6 hours. But you will really need to weather watch and time it well. A lot of people don't realize that Flagstaff is at almost 7,000 ft and the grand canyon lodge and visitors center is something like 5,000 ft. So while Phoenix is low and in the desert its all uphill from there basically.

Take 89 north out of Flagstaff to 64. Head west and enter on the east side of the park at Desert View. It’s less crowded and the views of the canyon are just as spectacular.

Then continue along 64 along the rim to the Visitor’s Center (20-30 min drive tops). There’s a few great spots to stop and take pics.

I think you’ll have a much better driving tour going this route.

It’s about a 4 hour drive each way from PHX. Dress warm. It will be pretty cold at the rim now. Looks like highs only in the 40s next week. And it can get pretty windy

Grand Canyon is really pretty at the rim when it snows.

Baldona, thanks for that info. I know Flagstaff but did not know about the lodge and viewing area were 5,000ft. Definitely good information there.
