The Battle of Franklin 1864

After the fall of Atlanta in Sept 1864, John Bell Hood and his 30,000 man army raced to Tennessee, hoping to distract tGOAT Gen. Sherman’s attention by threatening his supply base at Nashville. Sherman did not take the bait, and dispatched John Schofield’s 30k man Army of the Ohio to protect Nashville while the rest of Sherman’s army simply left their supply line behind and marched to the Georgia coast, forcibly burning and stealing what they needed from Confederate citizens in their path. 25K Union soldiers with George Thomas were entrenched in Nashville so if Schofield could reach them before Hood, he would command a numerical advantage on the battlefield. Hood’s hopes for a successful campaign rested on defeating Schofield before the two forces joined.
Hood led an assault on Nov 30 that cost him 20 percent of his men and allowed Schofield to progress toward Nashville to unite with Thomas.
The battle absolutely decimated the Confederates. Around 8,500 casualties on both sides, 6200 of them Confederates. Fourteen Southern commanders 8 of them generals become casualties, more than in any other battle of the war. Confederates absolutely BTFO

Hood should have been summarily executed after Franklin.
The reality was the western Federal soldiers were better than eastern soldiers (which Hood had fought). Hood thought if you charged right at them they would break, they didnt.

I recommend the book Widow of the South. Great story about the Battle of Franklin.

Schofield left his name on a .45 revolver and an Army base.

Hope he is still uncomfortable after his 100+ years of being roasted below

Carnton plantation is a really cool tour in Franklin. It’s a farmhouse that was used as a field hospital for the Union, and there are still blood stains in the wood floors from where the surgeons were performing amputations.

Stonewall of the West about Cleburne also has a good read on this one.
The assault by the two mile long confederate line may have been one of the greatest spectacles of the war.
Just an all or nothing “frick it all, let’s fight”

You took Atlanta…look at it now. Should’ve left it alone.

Also burned down Jackson and Columbia… both still look like shitholes today

Is that what Hood learned at Little Round Top, eastern Union soldiers would flee in the face of a determined attack?

Seriously? He was no worse than Jimmy Doolittle or Curtis LeMay.
And he was 100x the general Douglas MacArthur was.

Sherman’s life is made for a movie.
Dad dies, single mom with too many kids leads to him being fostered by a wealthy and important family, West Point, Indians, ship wrecks, gold rush in California, failed businesses, early days of LSU, accurately predicts what will happen in the civil war, Bull Run, Shiloh, may or may not have gone crazy, redemption, kicks arse as a general, fairly epic post war life running the army, seeing the world, etc.

I was unaware those men did it to their own countrymen.
