There is absolutely NO REASON to have a grease fire if you use it correctly and keep it maintained.

This is true, but it was a defect in design that was corrected last year.

YouTube reviews I watched showed that Series 2 corrected many issues but did not address the grease pan.

Agreed. There is a drip pan, set at an angle, that facilitates the dripping grease to run off into the grease bucket. Every once in a while, I have to take the grates off grab the drip pan and clean off what didn't run off. It's a lot simpler than getting all the ash out of my Big Green Egg.

I rarely use the Egg anymore. For more smoke, I just use a smoke tube.
