Around here, people make and bring food for the gathering held after the funeral. There is even a bereavement committee of older ladies that coordinate and try to make sure there is not a lot of duplication. After the funeral, those who wish to do so retire to either the deceased's house, a family member's house or a place retained for the gathering. If there is too much food, you can send some with people as they leave. I've heard of some where they even have beer.

The problem with the freezer suggestion is that people often bring over stuff in nice casserole dishes, etc. that you are expected to return. They want to be classy for such a somber occasion and a paper plate wrapped in siran wrap doesn't cut it.

I had the same problem when my each of my parents died. Sent food home with people after the funeral, froze some, and gave the rest to neighbors.

Meal Train is the best idea. All you have to do is sign up for the meal you want to provide, and on the day you desire. Win/win.

I'll give you my address and you can send the food to me. It won't go to waste.

It’s also supposed to be for guest and family. When my father passed we had an endless line of folks coming and going the few days after. Everyone was offered to make a plate.
