It’s just a type of uniform/costume to signal to others how they identify.

It’s like the goths or the urban culture people from high school.

Personally I think it’s similar to animals in nature who are venomous/poisonous often being brightly colored to warn other animals. Helps to know who to be wary of.

What about all of the animals who aren’t venomous or poisonous but have adapted similar patterns and colors of the poisonous/venomous animals?

I'm not in the least bit into the alternative look, but just for the record, aposematism in the animal kingdom is intended to ward off predators, not potential mates. Not exactly the same thing
