It’s a loose ball until you establish possession. By rule, possession is established the same way for loose balls as it is for catches, the only difference being a loose ball is still live if it hits the ground.
The snapshots of him with two hands on the ball aren’t as meaningful as folks seem to think. I wish someone would post a gif instead.
I’m sure I could find a screenshot of a WR in the endzone with two hands on a football right before it gets knocked out.. doesn’t mean he had possession in the endzone, which is what is required for a touchdown.
The fact that he had a knee down means nothing until he completes the recovery. Just like it means nothing that a WR’s feet are in the endzone until he completes a catch.
I don’t really agree with it being overturned, but I also think they probably got the call right by the letter of the rule.
