PPI producer price index just released 5 minutes ago

forecast 0.2% MoM

Actual was 0.4%

stock futures did NOT like that - down 20 points [s&p] but frankly, thats not such a thing yet

The same economists who incorrectly said inflation would be transitory will have a new incorrect characterizion of the current situation ready to drop tomorrow.

The real problem with PPI being up .4 is that it had been down the previous two months. This large a jump means we can expect price increases at the consumer level well into the Christmas season. If CPI comes out tomorrow and is over .1 -.2, the market is going to take another massive dump because that (along with Q3 earnings) make it more and more likely we see another .75 rate hike in November instead of the .5 everyone has been expecting.

Cleveland Fed updated their expectations for CPI to come in at 8.2%, which is .1% more than it was last week. While this would be a drop of .1% overall, the thing to remember that this is YoY and that Sept 2021 was up 5.4% over the previous year. This cumulative effect of all this is far outpacing wage growth and we see the impact of that in consumer credit use beating the hell out of expectations (estimates for credit use for September were around $25B, it came in at $32.2B). Just remember you have to take any number they give you and multiply by atleast 5 to get a remotely accurate number
