First time doing a cruise on the NCL. I've been on a few with Carnival. Any advice for the NCL or advice in general?

Thanks!

Eat as many meals as possible in the specialty restaurants. LeBistro French restaurant is our favorite. Cagney’s steakhouse is second. The Italian and Asian restaurants are also good. The small upcharge is the best bargain on the ship.

I was going to say something similar. Either upgrade to the specialty dining locations or just go casual. The time commitment for the main dining room just isn't worth it. For a 7 night cruise I would say doing 2-3 in specialty dining, maybe one in the main dining room and the rest casual.

If you can get into the solo cabins, you can in fact, drink all night long.

Honestly I have never understood this. I have sailed NCL 3 times and Carnival 8 times and I love the food in the main dining room. I guess maybe it is because I am not going to Ruth Chris on the regular.

I also do not understand the numerous post I see about people that only eat the buffet.

You are already paying for the food in the dining room why pay extra?

Agreed.

I pay attention to the MDR menu daily. If there’s something we want to eat on it, we dine there. On the one or two nights there’s not, that’s when I go for specialty dining.

On Carnival, I can get the steakhouse cut in the MDR for half the surcharge, so I do that also.

There’s so much included with my fare, I try to take advantage of that and treat myself to specialty dining once or twice.

Because there is too much other stuff also included in your cruise fare to waste time getting ready for and in the MDR when you can get close to the same quality on most ships on most lines at casual locations. Not buffet necessarily but casual locations. The differences between casual and MDR is not nearly as much as the difference between MDR and the average to better specialty locations.

Do Ocean Blu every night. Board late as always best time. Bid to upgrade cabin right till last day. I’ve gotten a few for as little as $200 total. Ask for the deluxe pillows and better toilet paper, it’s available. Have fun

Umm, there's free drinks, why would you do that?

The 'drink package' does NOT start/kick-in until you are well off-shore...NOT, from the minute you step onto the vessel ! You will be charged for anything you drink until you are well out to sea !

100% incorrect, you are charged the local taxes until you leave the port. So 20 cents or so for a beer in Miami.

You will be kicking yourself by the first night on NCL for doing multiple with Carnival before. NCL is a really good line and does most things right. You have freedom pretty much everywhere, unlike Carnival. The people on NCL are also going to be a cut above those of Carnival. Prepare for some trash still but for the most part, you’ll be among some really nice upper middle class folks who appreciate nice things. You won’t ever spend money on Carnival again.

Well said and completely agree. I went on one Carnival cruise and never again.

I really like NCL and I've done Disney before as well. I'd like to try Royal Caribbean at some point too.

I'm doing a RC in November. Not to hijack your thread OP but if anyone has any recommendations on that cruise line is appreciated.

I do agree with the other posters. I've only been on a Carnival cruise and everyone keeps telling me once I do a NCL or RC I will NEVER book with Carnival again.

Yea man, I’ll never understand why people think Carnival is great. It’s trashy as hell (not to be cliché). It’s like vacationing on a floating dollar general in Walker except everything is marked up 1,000%.

I could not have said this better myself. It really is exactly like that. I'm hoping RC is different. It looks nicer just from the miscellaneous things I've read online.

Not to mention Carnival, to my knowledge, is the only one that puts a limit on your drinks/day. Which probably is for the best due to the clientele they attract.

We sail RC almost exclusively now...what questions do you have? What ship are you on and out of what port?

Same general questions as the OP.

Food suggestions, things to do/not do..etc..

Is The Key worth buying?

We didn't buy the dining package but did get the drink package. We scheduled one lunch at one of the restaurants and planned to just use the dining hall. I haven't had the opportunity to prebook any shows or activities on the ship though. It has a tab for it on the website, but nothing is available.

We are going on the Resistance out of New Orleans.

That kind of depends on the ship. Resistance is not a Royal ship so not sure if you're on another cruise line or just have the name wrong.

Only if you knew 100% that you would be buying the internet package, otherwise, no. There just isn't enough value there.

For dining, I don't know if the ultimate dining package is the best value, again, unless you knew you were going to do specialty dining every night. BUT, the three night package is a great deal and often times you can get the Chops +1 deal and thats a good option too.

As soon as you get on board, book as much as you can from the app. If you have kids, get them registered for the kids clubs. Don't miss the spa raffle...I've won $250 in GCs there on two cruises. Only about 40 people show up and they give away at least 10 things. The Manager Special thay will offer on massages at that spa raffle will be the best deal on massages the whole cruise. Don't pre-book it, wait until on-board and buy that special.

The drink package is great and don't forget it includes bottle water and specialty coffees (not from Starbucks) . I get a nice alcoholic coffee every evening and it helps give that little boost I want to get through the evening.
