Frankly, this is a silly criticism.
And strangely we aren't expected to hold the rest of Hollywood to any sort of "moral" standards.
Hollywood is full of pedophiles, junkies and all around shitty people and we're supposed to worry about a guy who was too old to be a grunt not being in the military?
Ok.....
He loved his country.
I'll let Maureen O'Hara explain it and if HER word isn't good enough for everyone, then GFY:
Maureen O'Hara...

It wasn't intended to be a take or a criticism. I was just pointing out one different perspective that I thought would add to the discussion. Honestly, he probably just thought John Wayne was a pussy compared to the other guys that he knew and served with, and famous people like Jimmy Stewart, and Bob Feller (in sports) who interrupted their careers to fight. I'm not asking you to agree.
Maureen O'Hara and Elizabeth Taylor would have sacrificed a child to get in front of a camera and a microphone at that stage in their lives.
The silly take is you guys holding up a movie actor as a hero.

If Maureen O'Hara would tell me to do something, dammit, I would do it. No way I'm crossing her...seriously. she was one classy dame!!!!
