Muffed punt rule

What is the rationale for the rule that you can’t advance a muffed punt? Why can you scoop and score a fumble but not a muffed punt?

I’m not sure the rationale but people seem to think it’s a new rule - for as long as I can remember you haven’t been able to advance a muffed punt or kickoff.

Same reason why if you hit someone to hard they throw you out of the game.
We have to make a violent, contact sport that has inherent risk perfectly safe without the possibility of injury.
When you put yourself in a position to accomplish the impossible you come up with dumbass rules that do nothing for the game.

You cannot advance a fumble if you are the offense and recover. You are the offense when you snap the ball for a punt.

None of what you said has anything to do with a muffed punt. The rule has been around for as long as I can remember

You can advance a fumble when it’s not 4th down. That rule has nothing do to with this anyways. You can punt on any down. If you punt on 3rd down you still can’t advance a muffed punt. You can advance a fumble on a punt. TM7 stripped the return man and scored against Oregon in 2011.

I think when you are punting, you are still the offense, so you cant advance a muffed punt but I may be wrong

It has nothing to do with being on offense. You’re not on offense any longer once the punter’s foot strikes the ball. Which is why after the ball is punted any penalty committed goes from the spot of the return and not from the original LOS.
It was a rule made 100 years ago to get people to try to return punts more frequently instead of letting them go to avoid giving up an easy scoop and score TD.

They love rules. They love penalties. More penalties, longer game times, more commercials leads to more advertising dollars. It is all about money. I wonder if the refs are pressured to call a certain number per game?

In the old days a team couldn’t advance a fumble period, I wonder if this a remnant of this at rule.

most of those foul enforcement exceptions are in place to limit "redoing" of kick plays.
It's really simple once the ball is kicked the team is K and k cannot advance a kick. A kick is a kick until it possessed.
