No max protection

Watched the Miss St. game last night. I couldn't find one offensive snap where we max protected with two tight ends.
Even when we couldn't block anyone in the first half.
Max protection was the only way to keep Burrow upright in 2018. Shows how important Daniels' legs are to our offense.

We kept a tight end and running back in to block several times especially in the second half.
It doesn’t have to be two tight ends to be max protection. It just has to be 7 or more blockers.

Something tells me our TEs are better at running short/ check down routes than blocking…

The scheme we ran in 2019 was predicated on a 5 man protection with looks to disguise it. 5 out in pass patterns on almost every play with quick release. And a potent RB. The back has to block often. Show two TEs but they were not blocking that much.

Joe Burrow would have been better off in 2018 having more options to throw to instead of more blockers.

New school offense neutralizes the rush with more receivers not more blockers.
The biggest complaint of that 2018 offense was they were constantly in max protection and limited options to throw the ball to.

Yep to second quote.
Max protect didn’t work in 2018. Protection provided by making the defense rush fewer and defend more is much better than adding additional blockers to who aren’t good at blocking.

Depends on your quarterback.
With Joe you’re right. Joe processed quickly. Recognized blitzes and got the ball out quickly and accurately.
Jaden has been struggling to find the open man and has made some mistakes on reading the coverage. 5 man routes aren’t going to help a qb who struggles to get to the third option. So get him some extra blocking 2 quick routes and a deep option let him scan quick and take off if it’s not there.
Football isn’t one size fits all. What was good for Joe isn’t going to be good for every QB.

Its almost like Kelly doesn't get scared and knows how to coach around issues.

Yeah and 2019 showed how archaic that strategy is. In today's football you spread a team out to disrupt a pass rush. You dont bring in te to max protect and invite more people to the los. Spreading a team out makes them defend the entire field and somewhat highlights where they are bringing pressure from. Max protect brings more defennders to the los and box and makes it harder to identify who is coming after the qb.

Kelly actually mentioned in his post game remarks that they went to more max protect in the second half.

Its not a bad thing to do it sometimes but it was our main philosophy for combatting the pass rush in 2018. Its the main reason why we had all that talent and until we had a 7 ot game that offense was worse , production wise, than most Miles offenses.
