Capital One Shopping App

Just got this app this weekend.
Long Story short it gives cash back or applies coupons to stores when you purchase through the app automatically.
I'm not usually a coupon clipper, etc. But when all I have to do open the app and it links me straight to my walmart account which I use for pickup orders and gives me 5% off on top of the 5% I'm getting using my Walmart card... then that's 10% on every Walmart order.
Some other notable ones are 12% on VRBO bookings, 5% Home Depot, etc.
It will save the money and then you can cash it out to a digital gift card of your choosing like Walmart, etc.
Anyway, thought I would share.
Also, you don't have to use a capital one card to pay or even have a capital one card. It's free for anyone and you can pay how every you choose.

How does this work? Are they looking for discount codes to apply for you, or are they collecting data like what you buy, where you vacation, etc. and giving you money in the form of gift cards for it?

I think they do collect data, but they don't share it.
When you download the app and get logged in it will show you store logos and show what they offer. Either coupons (which will auto apply if you purchase those items) or how much % cash back you will get in the form of gift cards. You can then select which stores you want and add them to your favorites.
When you click on the store it will take you to the stores page and then you just login in with your store account and it links them.
With walmart I can shop from the Walmart app and go back through the cap one app and my cart is the same, etc.
You just have to go through the capone app first whenever you are ready to check out your cart. It's very simple.
After the payment is processed you can see your rewards and select which gift card you want to cash them out as. Walmart gift cards you can cash out between $5 and $500 dollars.

So if I book a vrbo with my credit card I get 12% cash back I can then use to buy a Walmart gift card, etc. Plus I get what ever cash back, etc benefit from using the card of my choosing.
It does seem to offer different %s off for different people. I don't know if this is based on credit score somehow or if you have a cap one card, etc. I just know me, my wife, and dad's were all different.
For example my dad got 2% off walmart, I got 5%, my wife got 3%. I had much better %s off than my wife on several things.

It's definitely not a scam or anything though. It used to be wikibuys and cap one bought it. My wife told me she had gotten it and I looked into it. She cashed out her first gift card yesterday and recieved it in email today.

Here is the main screen. I added those to my favorites, there are tons of stores though. Then you just click on the store and it takes you to the login page.

Rakuten often has better deals than capital one shopping. I do check it though at certain stores. Sometimes I get more money back at Academy using my Capital One card than using my Academy card.

I started with Ebates (now Rakuten) and Honey. But there’s like 50 different portals now.
I use the Chrome extension … CashbackHolic and see them all at once.

The discounts are banked and you cash them in for gift cards. I cashed in about $300 on a Walmart gift card.

You can link Rakuten for Amex pts which I mostly prefer than cash back.

I looked at rakuten and topcashapp a bit today. Deals to be had there as well. Just have to pick what's best for you imo.

Just going by what an article said.
quote:
But according to Capital One’s Opt Out Privacy Notice, they don’t share your information for other affiliate or non-affiliate companies to market to you.[1] In other words, you won’t have to worry about signing up for Capital One Shopping and suddenly being bombarded with marketing emails from companies you’ve never heard of.

It’s possible, but the way these contracts are written, I just have no faith that there isn’t a “fine print” type of loophole that allows them some venue to monetize the data.
Just as an example, your quote says, “ But according to Capital One’s Opt Out Privacy Notice, they don’t share your information for other affiliate or non-affiliate companies to market to you.”
But do they share your information or data for other reasons? Are they selling your consumption data to political parties who will use it to improve their voter prediction modeling? Are they selling it to insurance companies who will take the fact that you visit Taco Bell once a week to raise your insurance premiums? Will they sell it to the CCP who will use it to optimize your tic tok feed to keep you on the app longer? There are a lot of uses of your data beyond direct marketing.
Not trying to to say there isn’t any value in this product, there very well may be. Just that I’m personally no longer of the opinion that anything given out by multinational corporations is ever truly free.

But, this is how they will determine your ESG score
lulz, I'd give up a $300 Walmart gift card for them to just leave me alone
