Whole home surge protector

I searched and didn't see a thread on this. Does anyone have a whole home surge protector? Do they work? I'm looking at the Siemens FS140.
A coworker told me today something happened to a transformer by his house and fried his router, modem, and some GFCI's in his house. I know that's not much, but for the price of a good router I may be able to protect more expensive things like my TV.

I haven’t but I plan to do in the near future. I’ve already discussed with my electrician and he said he’d install it when he’s back at the house to do some electrical associated with interior renovations. And like you I’m thinking I’ll install the Siemens FS140. With all the circuit boards into today’s appliances including HVACs I think it’s a good idea.

Looks like cheap insurance. Should last forever. I recently started thing about getting one also. For the same reason as your co worker. We use something similar at camp sites for many different reasons. So just started researching these.
My question would be is it fast enough for lightning.

Reading more about them, you want to make the wiring from the unit to the 2-pole breaker as short as possible to make sure it is fast enough for lightning. The breaker should be in the first slot where the power comes in. Also, how long they last depends on the amount and strength of the surges it sees. There's a red light on this one that will flash if it is no longer working. Install looks like it can be a DIY project.

I had Levitron 3 phase installed on a business I own 3 years ago because of constant surges from entergy. After only being open a year, I had to replace 2 refridgeration compressors, 1 entire glycol beer cooking unit, and 1 computer. Since install, just regular maintenance. Worth the $1200. Have them single phase version at my home now

I have one. I have a family member who is an electrician install it. It is a Seimens. If I remember correctly cost me between $250 and $300. Zeta fried the control board for my ac unit so I had it installed one the ac was fixed. Had no issues after Ida.

They had some on the clearance table at Lowes a few years back. I installed one on each of my boxes.
After a storm last year one failed. I didn't lose any appliances. My neighbor did though. So possibly it did its job and saved me from a surge.
I still don't get how it works though. They are on breakers they aren't inline to the source like a GFCI or Arc fault is.

Ordered an Eaton surge device this past weekend. It was about $150 or so from Home Depot, plus the $20ish for the 50A breaker. I thought about the amount of electronics I have powered by my home panel and it makes sense as small insurance.
I plan to install it myself so in all under $200.

years ago, i had lightning hit my neighbors house.... it blew out a few things in my house.... but it came through the cable line, not the power line. food for thought.

Definitely get it my brother just started processing claims from Entergy and this is what he see's the most. He went and had one installed, don't remember the brand, but that one was flush mounted. Entergy denies surge claims if it is an act of God, so many claims are denied.
