This was more of an example of Daniels being one-read and take off. To me, Daniels could have stepped up in the pocket and do a better job of anticipating Boutte freeing up. Bech is also open, but he never saw him. Instead, he took off and picked up 8 yards, but this play could have gone for more.
I get the sentiment, but keep in mind that at this point Daniels had been sacked on 2 of his last 8 snaps.. and would have been sacked the previous play if not for a hold by Kole Taylor.
Nothing happens in a vacuum. Yeah, you’d like him to step up and deliver to Boutte in that spot (though Boutte does have a safety sitting right over him, so it’s going to be contested). But I’d also rather he gain 8 yards on the ground than take another sack. It’s a judgement call and he made the safest play for a nice gain.
Also that’s a really tough throw to Bech deep on the opposite side of the field while Dellinger gets beat on the right and Wire gets beat outside. Realistically his options there are throw to Boutte or take the wide open running lane.
Great post BTW, appreciate the screenshots.
