Need help on an Hawaii trip for this Christmas

Planning 1st trip to Hawaii in December the week before Christmas. Want to go to both Maui and Kauai and will rent a condo and car on each island. The trip will be MSY to OGG and then LIH to MSY with a island hopper in between.
Question 1) What you recommend as far as splitting the ratio of # of days in each island? If you had 8 nights would you do
4 and 4, 5 and 3 etc..
Question 2) Would you risk a return trip (10 hrs) on American with a 33 minute layover in Phoenix to avoid a 2 stop return (12-13 hrs)
Question 3) Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated.

Would do 4/4
Enough on both islands to split it up evenly
33 minutes is cutting it close with recent airline history and around the holidays you might want some cushion and a two stop return is not that bad to break up that flight

Thanks I am leaning to 4/4 and that 33 minutes layover seems cutting it too close..

How old are your kids?
Went to Hawaii in 2019 and added a night in California each way instead of dealing with shitty flight times.
Doing it again next year. My kids will be 4.5 and 1.5 though

I’d pick one island and spend the whole time there but if you want to do both go 4/4. Both islands have plenty to do but you are going at the busiest time of the year. Christmas is so packed. Don’t fret, you’ll have a great time. I say go for the 33 minute layover. You’ll probably make it and if you don’t, you’ll most likely get home about the same time

quote:Wife and college kid ..we can make it on one long day like we did to get to St John. I know there wont ever be enough time to see it all but want to do as much as we can on two different islands since the travel is extensive.
