And we still are by the definition. We are a net exporter of total petroleum products. We were not, even under President Trump, unless I’m missing something in the data, a net exporter of just crude oil.

We briefly lost the title of “net exporter of petroleum product” in 2021, but we are currently, as of May 2022 (that’s the latest data I could find) back to being a net exporter.

Why are we importing oil? We have to export a lot of it to be refined and then, turn around and re-import it as fuel.

quote:

Crude Oil Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia: US$161.7 billion (16.5% of exported crude oil)
Russia: $82 billion (8.3%)
Canada: $74 billion (7.5%)
Iraq: $72.1 billion (7.3%)
United Arab Emirates: $69.4 billion (7.1%)
United States: $41 billion (4.2%)
Norway: $40.2 billion (4.1%)
Kuwait: $36.3 billion (3.7%)
