You can also do this with a clear kitchen glass:
Basically, add a little water to the gas.
Shake, and let it sit on flat surface for 5 minutes.
You will see a distinct line between the ethanol gas and the water.

I pumped 40 gallons of "ethanol free gas" in my boat a while back.
It was NOT ethanol free.

This is the easy way to test. Ethanol binds with water. I saw a guy with a setup in his garage. It was the race gas can types of fuel containers. He threaded a valve on the end of the fuel hose. He would mix 1 cup of water in with 5 gallons of fuel. Shake it real good, hang it upside down, let it sit for awhile, then open the valve letting out the contents. You can see where the water/ethanol ends, and the fuel begins. Measure the water and ethanol that settled. 1 cup would be water and the rest would be ethanol.

Yes, in a Petroleum Laboratory setting there's several options, Gas Chromatography being the most reliable which produces quantitative data. There are other testing options which are only considered "indicators" and do not provide an actual numerical value.

If you were to use the Gas Chromatography option, ASTM D5599 Or D4815 will measure the Ethanol in Vol%. For example, 10% Ethanol in Gasoline would be determined by those test methods mentioned above.

If you're concerned about trace amounts, ASTM D7423, measures Alcohols (In this case Ethanol) in PPM levels (Parts Per Million). So, a Gasoline containing 10% Ethanol ˜ 100,000 PPM. So, 1 PPM of Ethanol ˜ 0.0001 vol%.

I'm sure there's home test available, but they would only be considered "indicators" not expressed as a number.

Hope this helps.

Drink it. If it gets you drunk, it has ethanol in it.
