I love burning wood in my outside fireplace but the wife wants a gas log set for the living room. We have a fully functional isokern masonry fireplace with gas run to it so could go with a ventless gas log set.

Any recommendations with regard to vented or ventless? Pros/cons? We don't necessarily need it to heat the house.

And past that, what brands should I be looking at?

Look at Home Depot. We got ours there to replace our wood burning set up. East to install if you have a gas line coming to the fireplace.

Vented looks markedly better
Ventless can heat your home way quicker

Real Fyre by Peterson is probably the best you’ll find. I bought a set three years ago. My wife turns them on more days than she doesn’t. The website has many options, and just about all of them have a ~10second video of them on fire- this should help you decide vented vs ventless. I went to a fireplace store. They told me their biggest seller (designer split oak). I saw it in store. Left with a catalog. Watched 50 videos. Narrowed it down. Walked in wanting to order a different one, saw the designer split oak in store again and decided it was the right one after all.

I had them install a remote. I chose one with a standing pilot because it had flame control on the remote. In retrospect, I would choose a simple milivolt pilot and control flame height with the valve, because switching the intensity just isn’t that important that it needs to be on the remote itself.

I got nevine and ordered what sounds like very close to what you have. Got charred oak logs. Same variable remote with pilot. What burner did you get? I got the g45.

I installed Real Fyre vented gas logs, with the remote for ignition and flame adjustment, after the big freeze in Feb 2021. They are a very nice product.

I ordered them on-line from the E-Fireplace Store. LINK. They have very helpful website with lots of info to assist in selection, vent vs ventless, size, instructions, etc. Probably many question you have can be answered from their website. I DYI installed them with the natural gas connections - it was straightforward with no issues.

I see you’re in Houma. I purchased mine from this fireplace store in Covington several years ago and I’ve been really happy.

Outdoor Living Center

Bring your dimensions and the reps will help you get setup.

I originally purchased a unit from Home Depot, but the click/auto start button only worked one time so I had to return it

The model from the outdoor living center lights with a long match or long lighter.

Definitely agree. If you want gas logs to heat your room or house, ventless logs are the way to go. Depending on the construction of your fireplace, you may have to get a metal heat shield installed at the top edge of the fireplace opening to divert heat away from the mantle. You don't want to damage the mantle and/or paint just outside the fireplace. We just installed ventless gas logs, but can't use them yet until I can add a metal heat shield. If we used it now, I bet the paint would bubble up and get discolored from the heat

It’s been a couple of years, but after looking, I’m 99% certain I also have the g45.

I have a second fireplace that we basically don’t turn on in our kitchen. I have no idea what brand of logs are in it, but it is certainly decent looking and beautifully set up, but it’s currently match-light. And I’m too big a wuss to retrofit a remote in there myself. It’s on the long list of home improvements, but I’m leaning millivolt pilot for it if I ever get around to doing it.

Got them installed, I like it.

Two questions, when it’s burning, you can hear the sounds of gas coming out of the burner, I guess that’s normal. (Not leaking gas, just the general sound a gas burner makes). Are there any products that you can put in to make crackle and snap sounds?

Also, note where I have the remote receiver on the bottom right. Does it need to stay there or can it be tucked away in the back?

I have my remote receiver in the same location as yours. Instructions say to place the receiver as far away from the burner possible, with minimum of 6 inches from burner. I would assume if you have space towards the back to meet those criteria you could move it. But in my case space is limited in the back as the walls of the fireplace angle inwards towards the back - from your photo it looks like yours does as well.

10-4, was wondering if the remote needed line of sight.

I’d does angle inward but I had enough room to locate it in the back corner more than 6” from the nearest flame and it’s working fine.
